Narrative Identity Strategy · Leadership · Organizations

Step into your story.

Most consulting begins with the plan. We begin before the plan.

We help founders, leaders, organizations, and students get honest about the story they are running on. Make it true, coherent, and worth building.

Who We Serve

Four crossroads.
One through line.

If your story isn't working, nothing built on top of it will.

01
Organizations

The story your people tell when you're not in the room.

02
Leaders

You threw a leadership party and nobody came.

03
Founders

All pitch, no story. The audience wants more.

This page doesn't write itself. Let's write it together.

How you know you need this.

Organizations

  • You have a mission statement. Nobody quotes it. Nobody lives it.
  • You went through a rebrand. The identity problem is still there.
  • Leadership says one thing. The team executes something else.
  • There is a values gap. Everyone feels it. Nobody names it.

Leaders & Founders

  • You have a pitch deck. Nobody leaves feeling what you feel.
  • You have changed your bio four times and it still doesn't sound like you.
  • People respect you in the room. They can't repeat what you said when they leave.
  • You have outgrown your story. You don't yet have the new language.

Agencies & Consultancies

  • Your client has a messaging problem that is actually an identity problem.
  • The brief keeps changing because the client doesn't know who they are yet.
  • You can execute the campaign. The foundation it needs doesn't exist yet.
  • Your deliverable will land harder with a narrative foundation underneath it.

Page 13

  • Your student has a standout story. The application sounds like everyone else's.
  • They go quiet when asked to talk about themselves. Or talk for twenty minutes and say nothing.
  • The process is nothing like a standard application. You need someone who knows that.
  • Every counselor you've met edits essays. None of them start with identity.
Our Why

Dreams don't fail.
Untold stories do.

For 21 years, I have been obsessed with one thing: what happens when someone finally gets their story straight. I have watched students walk into rooms that were never built for them and leave with offers, scholarships, and futures nobody saw coming. I have watched leaders stop performing and start leading. I have watched organizations stop spinning and start moving.

The work expanded because the truth did. Dreams and goals don't belong only to students. Leaders have them. Founders have them. Institutions have them. Every one of them deserves the best possible story told, with honesty, precision, and every tool in the arsenal.

This is why I do this. Not because it's a market. Because I have never found anything more fulfilling than watching someone finally say the true thing.

Every dream deserves a story worthy of it.

The Searchlight Method – Illuminate, Align, Activate
The Searchlight Method™

Readiness first. Then the conversation. Then what follows.

Most consultants begin with the deliverable. We begin with readiness. The most important work happens before anyone sits down together. The Searchlight Method is a three-phase framework for leaders and organizations navigating the narrative layer underneath everything else.

I

Illuminate: See What's Real

Before any work begins, we read the story as it actually exists. What is working, what is inherited, what is quietly incoherent. For organizations, leaders, founders, and students alike: we do not begin until we know what we are actually working with.

A

Align: Build the Conditions

This is what most practitioners skip. We build the container before anyone steps into it. The right conversations, the right structure, the right people in the room. Preparation is not overhead. It is the work.

A

Activate: The Work and What Follows

The engagement itself, and the follow-through that determines whether anything actually changes. We do not leave after the session. Accountability, communication, and check-ins are built into every engagement before it begins.

stewardship ˈst(y)o͞oərdˌSHip  ·  noun The careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care — especially people.

The Work

Every engagement begins
with The First Act.

Before any work begins, we read where you are. The First Act is how every Searchlight relationship starts: a contained, high-trust conversation that gives you an honest picture of the story you are telling, what is working, what is missing, and what is at stake. No commitment to what comes next. Just clarity about where you are now.

01 · Organizations

The Readiness Engagement

The full Searchlight Method. For organizations ready to do the work that makes every other intervention actually work. We assess readiness, build the conditions, facilitate the conversation, and hold the follow-through.

For institutions that have been burned by workshops that changed nothing. They are ready to understand why. And do it differently.
02 · Leaders

The Narrative Readiness Intensive

A leader-side engagement that combines narrative identity work with preparation for the challenges ahead. We examine the story you are leading from, build your capacity to receive honest feedback, and prepare you specifically for what is coming.

This is coaching with a framework underneath it.
03 · Founders

The Origin Session

Before you build the brand, build the story. A deep, one-on-one engagement for founders developing their narrative identity. Not their positioning. Their story. We go beneath the pitch to what you are actually building and why.

You leave with a Narrative Identity Brief: your core story, the tension that makes it interesting, and the through line that holds as everything else grows.

Post-Secondary Story Design

For students standing at the edge of what comes next. NCAA recruiting. Service academies. Conservatories. Visual arts. Fashion. UC, CSU, and out-of-state applications. We help students discover what makes them singular and build the story that gets them there.

This is identity work that produces essays, personal statements, and interview preparation that sound like a human being, not a template.

About

RJ Mabanta

Narrative Identity Strategist · CEO & Founder, Searchlight Studio

RJ Mabanta works at the story layer. The place where narrative lives before it becomes brand, before it becomes strategy, before it becomes the culture that either holds or quietly collapses. He finds what is true and builds from there.

He holds an MFA in Theatre and an MAEd in Educational Leadership. He was trained by the late Jewel Walker — one of the most rigorous story minds in American theatre. He has taught Socratic seminars in dramatic literature to Seoul's student elite, designed and launched two schools from scratch, and spent years at San Diego Unified School District's most experimental high school in the heart of Barrio Logan.

He has stood watch while ICE circled his campus. Sat with students whose lives included gangs, trafficking, and daily uncertainty. He has guided hundreds of college essays from hollow performance into bold, specific truth. The right doors opened because of it.

We just help them find their light.

Searchlight operates as a practice, not a solo act. When the engagement calls for it, RJ brings in the right people: a network built across education, organizational design, creative strategy, and elite admissions. The room is always built for the work.

The methodology is earned. The standard never changes: true, coherent, and worth building on.
